Prestige Park Trnava
Prijemné a tiche prostredie.

A week ago on Saturday I was helping to invigilate the Cambridge University FCE exam at the Prestige Hotel when I noticed two professional tennis players asking the receptionist if a continental breakfast was included in the price of the rooms they had reservations for. The receptionist was very helpful, courteous and spoke perfect English. When the two sportsmen spoke to each other I recognized a West African accent I was familiar with. I introduced myself in French and asked if they were from Cameroon. Surprised, they affirmed that they were Cameroonians. I then asked them what city they were from and they said that although they now lived in Paris, their hometown was Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, where I had lived for several years. I immediately switched from speaking French to Ewondo, the language of that part of their country. They were shocked. I asked “Mbolo, wa ka ve na wa zu ve?”, “Hello, where are you coming from just now and where are you headed.” They turned to the receptionist and with wide eyes said “This man is speaking my tribal language, how is that possible?” I replied, “Ma anga atili bekalata minkana wom”, “I have written some books about your tribal proverbs.” I had work to do so I let them check into the hotel. I told this story to my Lunch and Learn students at Vallis, because they are reading a book in English I wrote about Cameroonian children. A few days later these same students were sitting in an outdoor cafe when one of the tennis players approached and asked if they could speak English, he was trying to find a particular address. Proudly, my students told him which way to go and then asked, “Are you from Cameroon?” and then repeated the African names of some of the characters from the book. The gentleman was astounded that Slovaks could identify his nationality just by observation and knew words from his language. This past Saturday, I was back at the Prestige to invigilate the CAE exam. There was a different receptionist on duty who was just as friendly and professional as the previous one. The Prestige is rated as a four star hotel. I would, however, give the conference facility no stars. The events staff were rude beyond belief towards the seventeen exam candidates and shouted at them until the director of Vallis had to intervene. This kind of behavior brings down the reputation of the Prestige. The Hotelstars Union, which allocates stars in Europe, would undoubtedly lower their status if they were aware how event guests were treated and how dirty the conference room was. Broken bottles had been left in the room and we had to sweep up the shards of glass and mop the floors ourselves. We were obliged to ask that the bathrooms be stocked with toilet paper, and we had to repair the curtains to make the room acceptable. The tables and chairs were not cleaned or arranged for the exam when we arrived, and these were left for us to do. This is the last time we will be using this facility until the events management is changed. Many of the CAE candidates who were shouted at were from a school that had booked their stužková banquet with Prestige this year. They commented that the food was bad and the restaurant staff was quite rude. Four-star hotels should have four-star waiters and four-star supervisors who are considerate, polite, and responsive, and who know that in an economy based on competition, good service is the only key to success. Clients in Slovakia now have a choice and will go elsewhere if they are mistreated. A bad waiter and an irresponsible organizer will eventually bankrupt a business. What is ironic is the fact that in Africa such things would never happen. In Cameroon, for example, the waiters and staff of a four-star hotel would be much more professional and take great pride in their work and service, and the conference rooms would be immaculately clean and ready when the client arrived.
